Offbeat Madhya Pradesh: Episode 2 - 64 Yogini Temple, Mitawali

The Chausath Yogini Temple, located in Mitaoli village (also spelled Mitawali or Mitavali) near Padaoli in Morena district, approximately 40 kilometers from Gwalior, is a remarkable historical monument. According to an inscription dated 1323 CE (Vikram Samvat 1383), the temple was constructed by the Kachchhapaghata king Devapala (r. c. 1055-1075). It is believed that the temple was once a center of learning, particularly in astrology and mathematics, based on solar transits.

Recognized for its historical significance, the Archaeological Survey of India has declared the temple an ancient and historical monument under Act No. LXXI of 1951, dated 28/11/1951.

Perched atop a solitary hill, the circular Chausath Yogini Temple, also known as the Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. The temple derives its name from the presence of numerous Shiva lingas within its cells. As one of the few circular temples in India, it is dedicated to sixty-four yoginis.

The temple’s circular design, spanning a radius of 170 feet, encloses 64 small chambers. A unique feature of the central shrine is the presence of perforated slab coverings that facilitate rainwater drainage into an underground storage system. The intricate network of pipelines connecting the roof to the storage tank is still visible.

Despite being located in a Seismic Zone III region, the temple’s robust design has withstood numerous earthquakes over centuries, preserving its circular structural integrity.

The temple’s distinctive circular architecture has often drawn comparisons to the Indian Parliament building (Sansad Bhawan). While some speculate that the temple may have inspired the Parliament’s design, definitive evidence is lacking.
